"Occasional Infiltration: AI-Generated Content Sneaks into Your Google News Feed, Google Clarifies Specific Conditions"
In the vast landscape of online information, the infiltration of AI-generated content into your Google News feed is becoming a subtle concern. Recent observations suggest that articles created by artificial intelligence can slip through the cracks, ending up on one of the most popular news platforms.
Google, the tech giant responsible for curating content on its News platform, has acknowledged this phenomenon. However, the company emphasizes that such instances are not a widespread occurrence but rather happen under specific circumstances.
Google News, once considered a reliable source for the latest and most accurate information on various topics, is now grappling with the challenge of filtering out AI-generated content. A recent report from 404 Media shed light on how websites filled with AI-generated articles, often copied from other sources, can potentially make their way into the news feed.
The report cited examples of AI-written articles slipping past Google's usual detection methods. One notable case involved a news site called Worldtimetodays, which published an article about Star Wars. Upon analysis, it was discovered that the article closely resembled one previously published by Distractify. Odd phrasings, indicative of AI, and the reuse of an identical author photo raised red flags. For instance, the replicated article read, "Let's be honest, war of stars fans," instead of addressing Star Wars fans directly. Furthermore, the site featured articles that seemed to be mere rewrites of Heavy's content, even retaining Heavy's watermarked images.
As artificial intelligence continues to advance and becomes more accessible, the risk of encountering plagiarized articles and unreliable information, some of which may end up on Google News, seems to be on the rise. Google responded to 404 Media's concerns, stating that while they strive to combat spam on Google News, they aren't overly concerned about whether an article is authored by humans or AI. According to a Google representative, the primary focus is on the quality of the content.
"Our focus when ranking content is on the quality of the content, rather than how it was produced. Automatically-generated content produced primarily for ranking purposes is considered spam, and we take action as appropriate under our policies," the statement read.
Google clarified that websites are automatically considered for Google News, and the system may not immediately detect new sites. Despite the goal of rewarding "original content that demonstrates expertise and trustworthiness," it appears that Google is grappling with the challenge of preventing AI-generated articles from slipping through the cracks.
In summary, while AI-generated content may occasionally make its way into your Google News feed, Google asserts that it happens under specific circumstances and is actively working to maintain the platform's integrity by upholding quality content standards.
